Platform vs. Product

I've seen a flurry of posts over a new cellphone with an integrated GPS and some custom Google Maps software for driving directions. The phone and service is cool, but I fear the worst. I dug around a bit, and I couldn't find any information about the GPS features of the phone except for those advertised. What I mean by 'fearing the worst' is that the GPS functionality in the phone is limited to the specific applications the cell provider has included. What they have created is a Product, a thing with features that work as advertised. I think they are really missing the boat. What the world needs is a Platform to support all the cool things people can build on such technology. Let me illustrate:

The Internet that we all use today is build upon a platform that can be expanded and extended to do new and unique things. Back when the 'Net was new, email was about the only useful thing the common person would use it for. Then, the 'web' was invented and became so popular that people thought the web was the Internet. Now we have VOIP Systems, YouTube, and who-knows-what tomorrow. Had the Internet been released as a product (think AOL and Prodigy), we would all be stuck with about the same technologies today as when the product was introduced.

The common phone system is another example. If the phone system had been released as a product, then things like voicemail, text-to-speech email engines, and automated dentist appointment reminders may have never been invented.

Let's extend these past examples to Helio's product. They currently offer driving directions from your current location, a buddylocater service, and GPS positioned Google maps. Cool huh? Not as cool as it could be. Imagine for a minute, that Helio included (in addition to their current products) features that would allow their system to be used as a platform. Your current position (Lat, Lon, and Elevation) could be easily displayed on screen or inserted into a text message. An API would be available to help developers write software to take advantage of their GPS engine. They would have webservices available to allow reporting (or querying) your current position. Happy geeks everywhere start writing mashups using these tools. GeoCaching software alerts you when you wander close to a Cache that you have not yet found. RememberTheMilk sends you a proximity alert of the tasks you have tagged to a particular location (such as buying stamps from the post office). My wife can pull up my current location on the web, and receive alerts when I'm on my way home from work. Will Helio develop all those applications? Not likely. If they provided a platform, people would write those enticing applications for them.

Now, it is entirely possible that Helio has much more available then they are currently advertising. I hope so.
