I've been watching the 'non-computer information device' space for awhile now, and have been fairly disappointed with the options.

Ambient Devices makes some very nice options, including the Orb, a globe that changes color based on some information source. The idea is great: An easy to use device that conveys information about something you care about. The downside is that they use a nationwide FM network to transmit the information to the devices, requiring them to charge a monthly fee. Using an FM network for data transmission does allow use of the device without a computer (think Grandma), but in this case also restricts user modification, customized services, and cost effectiveness.

Another interesting entry is the oddly named (and designed) Nabaztag. Quite the opposite of the Ambient Devices Orb, the 'rabbit' is customizable, works on a local network, has a variety of sensors and output indicators, and is pretty stupid looking. It allows much more of the features that I would like, but really is pretty ugly.

Recently demonstrated at CES2007, the WidgetStation appears to be a nice combination of the two. Customizable, local network enabled, and quite nice looking. I'm excited to see what they do with the product. Hopefully, it won't be out of my pricerange.
